A CAMAKAU (traditional Fijian canoes) Race was held in Fulaga Island in Lau after a lapse of 20 years.

The race was organised to revive traditional boat-building knowledge passed down through generations.

Government in a statement said organisers of the event had designed the program to bring the people of Fulaga together.

The event also allowed the four villages in the district to utilise timbers from their island forests to create their canoes.

The event highlighted traditional sailing skills while promoting sustainability and community resilience.

The race was supported by the Coalition Government, through the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs and the Ministry of Information, in promoting and celebrating Fiji’s culture, traditions, and indigenous skills.

Prizes were sponsored by the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Culture, and Heritage. The Camakau Race was a three-week event.
