A tourist was allegedly robbed of more than FJD $2,000 in broad daylight along Rukua Street in Nailuva, Suva, on Sunday, with police confirming the incident and stating that investigations were continuing.
The alleged robbery occurred at around 12.30pm while the victim was waiting for a taxi near a T-junction close to a Korean-run church.
The tourist told police that three men approached and forcefully took a small crossbody bag containing a wallet with cash.
During the struggle, the victim fell to the ground, sustaining scratches to the right knee, damage to clothing and an injury to a finger. After taking the bag, the suspects reportedly ran toward an empty lot along the roadside.
When the victim attempted to pursue them, one of the suspects allegedly picked up stones and threw them, forcing the victim to stop the chase out of fear for personal safety.
Members of the public assisted the victim immediately after the incident.
A passer-by returned personal items dropped during the struggle, while a woman who heard calls for help arranged transport to the police station and paid the taxi fare.
She later provided a statement to police.
Officers returned to the scene with the victim, spoke with nearby residents, and obtained witness statements from two individuals who reportedly saw the suspects fleeing.
The victim was later escorted to hospital for treatment before giving a formal statement.
Police issued a written case receipt and classified the matter as robbery.
When contacted, police confirmed the report and said investigations were continuing.
They have not disclosed whether any suspects have been identified or arrested.
