THE increase of Fiji’s room occupancy rates by an average of 62.5 per cent between 2020 and 2025 shows that Fiji has not only recovered from the COVID 19 pandemic but has thrived.
While acknowledging the critical economic role of the tourism industry at the 2025 ANZ Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards (FETA) in Nadi over the weekend, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said tourism remained a cornerstone of the country’s economic infrastructure.
“Despite global uncertainty and evolving travel patterns, our industry has demonstrated remarkable adaptability and resilience,” said Mr Rabuka.
He said by leveraging Fiji’s unique cultural heritage and natural beauty, the nation continued to transform challenges into opportunities for sustainability and growth, ensuring tourism remains the bedrock of the national economy.
The Prime Minister highlighted the September 2025 Quarterly Report for tourism earnings revealing that about $918.4million was generated from holiday arrivals.
He said earnings for September 2025 were 23.4 per cent higher than the amount recorded for June 2025 which was an unprecedented growth that reflected sustained global demand for authentic and high-quality Fijian experiences.
“These are not merely positive indicators. They are signals of renewed confidence in Fiji as a premier South Pacific destination.
“They reflect the trust that international travellers place in the quality, safety and consistency of our tourism offering.”
He added the Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards was a night to celebrate the significant contributions of the tourism industry.
“The achievements we celebrate tonight are the result of a coordinated ecosystem — from frontline airport personnel and tour operators to hotel managers, transport providers, restaurateurs, marketers and policymakers.
“Each plays an indispensable role in delivering a seamless and memorable visitor experience.
“Equally important are our strategic partners and sponsors. Your continued investment and collaboration have strengthened the foundations of this industry and ensured that the benefits of tourism are widely shared across communities.”
