Ablaze Netball club’s recent Australian tour has shown significant improvements in the team’s performance, as shown by their victory over Tiki Mokosoi team in the fourth round of the NewWorld Suva Netball Association 2025 club competition.
The match, which took place at the National Netball Centre in Laucala, saw Ablaze Red emerge victorious with a scoreline of 19-15.
A total of 60 club members, across the under-13, under-15, and under-18 grades, participated in the tour.
For many of these girls, it was their first time flying, and the experience of traveling to Australia was attributed to the opportunities provided by the sport of netball.
Filomena Korovulavula, the club president and a former Fiji National Netball rep, noted the positive impact of the Australian tour on the team’s development.
“It’s a good development for the team, I have seen a lot of improvement especially their structure of the game their confidence, that’s the main thing in our tour,” said Korovulavula.
“A lot of learning processes for us, most of my players in the development grade have really got that exposer playing with overseas teams, which was a great opportunity for the team.”
She adds the tour was particularly beneficial for the development grade players, who hail from primary and secondary schools. It provided them with exposure to higher levels of competition and a platform to showcase their talent.
“We are the champions last year in the Angels grade, and this year we are looking at defending it again.
“Looking at our match against Tiki Mokosoi team today in the round four, it was a great match, the girls really showed their performance and got the win.”
“Netball now we need a vision, for someone to be there, for someone to take Netball in another level, especially the Fiji Netball should look into that.”
She stressed the importance of ongoing support from parents and the need for Fiji Netball to prioritise player development and strategic planning for the sport’s future growth.
