In a sport where every decision counts, Fijian referee Torika Delai is about to make one of the biggest calls of her career, on the global stage.
Delai has been appointed to officiate at the FIFA under-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2025, becoming only the second Fijian woman to reach this level and the sole referee selected from the Oceania region.
She is part of an elite panel of 18 referees and 36 assistant referees from 36 FIFA member associations, marking a proud moment for Fiji and the Pacific.
Delai will officiate alongside assistant referees Allys Clipsham of New Zealand and Natalia Lumukana of the Solomon Islands, forming an all-female, all-Pacific officiating crew.
Her appointment follows in the footsteps of trailblazer Finau Vulivuli, who was part of several FIFA World Cup panels between 2008 and 2016.
In a Facebook statement, president of the Fiji Football Association Rajesh Patel praised Delai’s achievement as more than personal.
“It’s the hard work and dedication of her, and we are proud of her achievement. We are sure she will make everyone proud,” said Patel.
“Delai’s inclusion in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup is not just a personal triumph, but a powerful symbol of progress, representation and opportunity in women’s football.”
Fiji FA vice president and Women’s Football director Nazia Ali Krishna said Delai’s journey is inspiring a new generation.
“Her selection is a milestone not just for her, but for all women in football across Fiji and Oceania,” said Krishna.
“She is a role model for young girls across Fiji, showing that their place in football can be anywhere, including the centre of the pitch.”
In May this year, Delai also officiated an international friendly between the Matildas (Australia) and Slovenia in Perth, another sign of her growing reputation on the world stage.
Her rise highlights the Fiji FA’s dedication to empowering women as referees, coaches and leaders as part of its strategic plan.
