Top coach helps Fiji

SQUASH Fiji’s preparation for the 2015 Pacific Games received a major boost this month.

Australian Marc Foster was in the country to groom the local coaches, who are in charge of preparing the national team to the Games to be held in Papua New Guinea in July.

Foster, who is internationally accredited to coach coaches, arrived on December 7 and ran a series of clinics in Lautoka, Suva and Savusavu before departing on December 16.

Squash Fiji president Ravi Singh said the turnout in the clinics was overwhelming.

He said the interest in the sport was gradually improving.

Foster spent a week in Fiji coaching coaches and guiding them on how to coach players at the junior, senior and national levels.

In addition, he also took out time to coach juniors and national team members on skill and fitness techniques.

“The program has been made possible with the assistance of the Oceania Squash Federation and is aimed at coaching and accrediting local coaches,” Singh said.

“In the long run, this will have the effect of lifting the level of squash in Fiji.

“Interest is growing in the sport in Fiji and this was a real opportunity to lay the foundation for developing the sport further.”

Singh said former national reps Filimoni Lesuma and Andrew McGoon, who are tasked to look after the preparation of the national team to the Pacific Games, took part in the program.
