Fiji swimmer Tolu Young was Fiji’s flag bearer during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad.
Young will be competing in the 50-meter butterfly, 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, and 100-meter freestyle.
Earlier this year, the 17-year-old Curtis High School junior in the US, set a Washington state and All American 4AA record in the 50-yard freestyle at the King County Aquatic Center.
The Savusavu lad went 17.73 seconds to break the record of 19.81 set three years ago by Glacier Peak’s Matt King.
He moved to the US in mid-2019 during the COVID-19 pandemic and swam for Fiji during the Commonwealthq Games in Birmingham.
Young recently competed at the World Aquatic Championship in Japan with Hansel McCaig and Kelera Mudunasoko.
Fiji’s other swimmer at the Commonwealth Youth Games is Anahira McCutcheon who will compete in the 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle, and 100m butterfly.
