PM condemns racial politics
The Prime Minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, last night hit out at political parties whose leaders preached narrow racial philosophies and formed “unholy alliances” in an attempts to bring the country to its knees. In opening his Alliance Party’s election campaign, the prime minister said Alliance had lost the previous election because it was a multiracial party.

council elected
Almost 900 people went to the polls on Saturday to vote in their first town council. They elected Jerry Tikaram, Fintan MacManus, Abdul Rahiman, Eric Emberson, Suresh Motibhai Patel, Anil Singh, Paula Naveata, Uraia Koroi and Vereniki Nukucagina Vatucawaqa.

Bandits hit Suva store
Four masked men, one of them armed with a cane knife, made a lightning daylight raid on a Flagstaff shop yesterday, grabbing three cash registers and making off in a stolen car. “It was all over in 30 seconds,” the stunned owner of Apteds Supermarket, Mr Bill Apted told The Fiji Times yesterday.
Tribunal move
strongly resisted
The establishment of a Fijian lands and titles appeals tribunal met with some strong opposition and mixed feeling at the Great Council of Chiefs meeting in Somosomo in Taveuni yesterday. A group led by former minister for Fijian Affairs Ratu William Toganivalu wants the matter to be thrown out or deferred.

Hibiscus uproar
The Hibiscus Carnival ended in a typical Suva downpour on Saturday night, and more significantly, amid confusion who should have won the Miss Charity contest. Miss Charity Kathleen Sikivou, sponsored by Hyundai Motors, had raised $25,000 followed by Miss Fiji Posts and Telecommunications Rigieta Tauaga who put up $22,000.

Fiji finished third on the medal tally as the 10th South Pacific Games closed yesterday at Papeete in a kaleidoscope of colours, fireworks, tamure dancing, hymns and the handing over of the Games flag to next host, Guam.

Sugar in crisis
The Fiji Sugar Corporation is insolvent and even lacks the fund to guarantee next season’s harvest, according to managing director John McFadden. He said the only reason the company continued to operate was because of a “letter of comfort” from the Government.
Kanailagi’s wrong,
says media body
The Fiji Media Council has criticised the way a senator expressed his views on The Fiji Times and Fiji Television being agents of evil. Media Council chairman Daryl Tarte said Senator Tomasi Kanailagi’s statements were disturbing especially when he was a church leader and a member of the Senate.

Minister housed
in upmarket hotel
Thousands of dollars have been spent housing a former high commissioner — now a Cabinet minister because public quarters are not ready. The arrangements were made for Minister Without Portfolio Adi Samanunu Talakuli Cakobau, who arrived in the country at the end of her diplomatic posting about two weeks ago.
Review jails: Hughes
Police Commissioner Andrew Hughes has called on prison authorities to review procedures concerning the supervision of inmates because of the strain that escapees placed on the force. Mr Hughes said a thorough review of all procedures would put a halt to the current rate of prison breakouts.
