MEREANI Ravuca says feeding her family of six is more than just a daily responsibility but a commitment to health and smart spending.

The mother of four has found a way to stretch her weekly grocery budget while ensuring her children receive nutritious meals filled with fresh, wholesome ingredients.

She spends between $200 and $250 every week on groceries, which she manages carefully in today’s rising cost of living.

Despite the challenges, she prioritises quality over convenience, especially when it comes to her children’s nutrition.

“I always make sure my children are well fed and food is important, but healthy food is even more important for growing children,” she said.

She emphasies that her shopping routine is centred around Shop N Save Supermarket in Nabua.

She said this location offers both affordability and convenience.

Being close to her home in Raiwaqa, it also allows her to save on transport costs while also making frequent trips when needed.

“It’s nearby and the prices are reasonable.

“I don’t have to travel far, and that helps me manage my weekly budget better.”

Mereani is also a market vendor at the Suva Municipal Market.

Having to be a vendor for more than two decades, she is surrounded daily by an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, something she uses for her family’s benefit.

“Because I’m at the market every day, I always have access to fresh vegetables.

“Our kitchen is always filled with green leafy vegetables.

“Leafy greens such as rourou, cabbage, and spinach are common in our household.

“These vegetables are not only affordable but also packed with essential nutrients that support my children’s health.

“I believe in simple meals and you don’t need expensive food to eat healthy, just fresh, natural ingredients.” Mereani’s says grocery shopping is important to her as she ensures the product she brings home to her family is healthy and safe.

She said by combining supermarket shopping with fresh market produce, she maintains a balanced diet for her family without exceeding her budget.

She also emphasises the importance of planning ahead.

Before heading to the supermarket, Mereani makes a list to avoid unnecessary spending and impulse purchases.

“If you don’t plan, you end up buying things you don’t really need and a list helps me stay focused.”

Her weekly meals often include a mix of root crops, vegetables, and occasional protein such as chicken or fish.

She said by keeping meals simple and consistent, she avoids waste and ensures every dollar is well spent.

Like any mother, Mereani said she wants her children to grow up strong and healthy, and she believes that good food plays a part in that.

She also highlights that shoppers must spend wisely.

Mereani believes that feeding her family is not just about putting food on the table — it’s about nourishing them with care, intention, and love.

She urges shoppers to be vigilant towards the items they choose to buy for their families.

She also stresses the importance of sticking within the budget to avoid overspending.
