At 74-years-old Mere Tukai rises each morning with purpose, quietly defying the limits often placed on old age.
In Narere, where roadside stalls line the streets with colour and chatter, she stands as a symbol of resilience, serving not just produce, but a story of strength shaped by sacrifice.
Originally from Qoma Island, Mrs Tukai’s life has been one of endurance. A former member of the Fiji Police Force, she raised seven children on her own after the death of her partner.
Leaning on faith and determination to see her family through hardship, she continues to sell root crops and vegetables, to support her household.
Despite rising living costs and daily challenges, her commitment has never wavered. Every dollar she earns goes back to her children and grandchildren. A reflection of a life rooted in giving rather than gain.
Her story is not one of grand recognition, but of quiet perseverance.
With six children now serving in the military and one in the police force, she counts her blessings not in wealth, but in the lives she has helped shape. At home Mrs Tukai, chooses healthy food options for her family. She allocates $300 for household groceries fortnightly, ensuring her family are well provided for.
