SEVENTEEN journalists and sub-editors from The Fiji Times successfully completed a 13-week ABC Foundations of Journalism course.

The first batch of trainees were recognised for completing the course during a certificate presentation this week.

While congratulating the first cohort, The Fiji Times editor-in-chief, Fred Wesley, said the course was a great opportunity for senior journalists to refresh their skills and for juniors to gain more knowledge on the fundamentals of journalism.

“We have a lot of experienced and senior journalists, and this was sort of a refresher course for them,” said Wesley.

“It is always encouraging to see people engage in training programs like this because it provides a good reminder of the little things that we do to achieve, which is good, quality journalism. This is the first time The Fiji Times is part of a course that so many people are doing together.

“I thank and congratulate those who did this course and for taking the time to do it.”

Team leader news Shayal Devi said learning new skills was a highlight of the course.

“Things like mobile journalism and photojournalism are things that are relevant in this digital age and what I found interesting was getting into the deeper nuances of issues like gender violence because these are things that we write about,” said Ms Devi.
