Minister for Defence Pio Tikoduadua has highlighted the role of Fiji’s institutions in maintaining stability during the 2022 general election transition while acknowledging the evolving role of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

Speaking in Parliament during the debate on the President’s Address, Tikoduadua said the Office of the President played a critical constitutional role during the period of political uncertainty that followed the election.

“At the outset, I wish to reflect briefly on an important moment in our recent national history,” he said.

“In 2022, Mr Speaker, Sir, during a period of political transition and uncertainty following the general elections, the Office of the President carried a significant constitutional responsibility.”

Tikoduadua said former President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, the Tui Macuata, presided over the constitutional processes with confidence during the transition.

“At that time, the former President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere… presided over the constitutional processes that followed the election with confidence, courage and strength,” he said.

“During that period, the nation was closely observing how institutions would respond. The Presidency provided continuity and calm while constitutional mechanisms for the formation of Government were carried out.”

He said the conduct of national institutions during the transition helped strengthen public confidence in democratic governance, particularly given Fiji’s history of political disruptions.

Tikoduadua also used the address to recognise the contribution of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) to national security and international peacekeeping efforts.

“The RFMF is one of the country’s central national institutions. For decades it has represented Fiji in international peacekeeping operations and contributed to missions across the world under the auspices of the United Nations and other international arrangements,” he said.

However, he also acknowledged that the military had previously been involved in political developments.

“It is necessary to recognise our history with honesty. There were periods in Fiji’s past when the military institution became involved in political developments in ways that served particular political agendas,” Tikoduadua said.

He said the direction of the force has since changed.

“Today, the direction of the institution is different. Under the leadership of Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, the RFMF continues to emphasise professionalism, discipline and service to the nation as a national institution,” he said.

Tikoduadua added that the leadership of the force is focused on strengthening professional standards and ensuring the military performs its duties within the framework of the law.
