Fiji Rugby Union operations manager Tiko Matawalu has addressed the recent brawl that took place during the Ra Rugby Union competition held at the Ra Sports Ground last Saturday.

The incident, which was captured in a video and uploaded on social media, involved fans from two teams fighting

Matawalu has acknowledged that the issue stemmed from drunk spectators.

He emphasised such behaviour is unacceptable and has identified this as the root cause of the problem.

“The issue for that there was drunkards being allowed into the facility, and that was the cause of the problem,” said Matawalu.

“The incident that happened, it was the team running after the spectators that were drunk and were swearing, you know, so, yes, we’ve identified the problem.”

The Fiji Sports Council, who are the facility owners, are also investigating the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“The Fiji Sports Council has also taken the process, and that is something that’s going to be investigated as we move forward from here, regarding events.

“Events happening in the facilities is it’s an uncalled-for incident, something that we don’t want to entertain.”

Matawalu stressed the importance of maintaining tight security measures and ensuring that law enforcement is present during events.

“It’s about having the law enforcers and ensure that the securities are tight with the supporters and fans moving into the field, making sure that they don’t carry alcohol with them inside, or they are not drunk when they are in the facilities.”
