Fiji has reaffirmed its “firm and resolute” ties with China as the two nations marked 50 years of diplomatic relations in Suva.
Acting Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad told guests at the celebrations on Saturday, September 27, that the relationship was at an unprecedented level, built on respect for sovereignty, mutual prosperity and shared interests.
He said the partnership had “stood the test of time”, pointing to President Xi Jinping’s 2014 visit to Fiji and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s 2024 trip to China, as milestones in deepening ties.
Prof Prasad said thousands of Fijians have benefited from Chinese-backed infrastructure, education and health projects, including initiatives under the Belt and Road framework.
He highlighted the proposed Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project as a key example of ongoing cooperation to boost connectivity, tourism and growth in the North.
He also paid tribute to Fijians of Chinese descent, calling them an integral part of the nation’s development and cultural heritage.
