Thunderstorm warning issued for heavy rainfall

A severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall is now in force for parts of the country, with residents urged to remain alert as unstable weather conditions continue.

The warning covers northeastern Viti Levu, from Ra–Rakiraki through Tailevu North to Nasinu–Nausori and Naitasiri, as well as the eastern half of Vanua Levu, including Labasa to Udu Point, Wailevu through Savusavu to Saqani, and the Natewa area.

According to weather officials, afternoon and evening thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall are expected over the next few hours.

These conditions may result in flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

The current weather is being driven by an active trough of low pressure combined with prevailing winds, creating unstable atmospheric conditions.

This is leading to thunderstorms with intense lightning and heavy rain, expected to persist until late afternoon or evening.

Authorities also caution that thunderstorms can be hit-and-miss, meaning rainfall and impacts may vary between locations and not all areas will be affected.

Residents are urged to continue monitoring weather updates and take necessary precautions as conditions evolve.
