SWAMI Vivekananda College’s rising field athlete Gladden Semesi is embracing the challenge of the 2026 Coca-Cola Games, determined to deliver a strong performance in his first year competing in the junior boys’ division.
The Motusa, Rotuma native arrives in Suva today carrying both expectation and belief as he steps into the junior boys category, ready to make his mark in the shot put and discus events.
Semesi is no stranger to the big stage. Last year, he announced his arrival in emphatic fashion, clinching gold in the sub-junior boy’s discus and rewriting the record books with a throw of 43.64 metres.
Now a Year 10 student, he returns stronger and more focused, convinced that the hard work behind the scenes will pay off.
“This year comes down to sacrifice and commitment,” Semesi said.
“I’ve done the hard yards. I’m proud that I broke two records for the Coke Games and set records in the junior division this year.”
While his outing at the Nadi Zone competition did not go entirely to plan, the young thrower remains grounded and optimistic, choosing to focus on progress rather than setbacks.
“For the Nadi Zone, I didn’t do that well, but I’m proud I still managed to set new records. Coming into the Coke Games, I just have to stay positive and keep moving forward,” he said.
His strength, however, goes beyond the throwing circle. Guided by faith, Semesi believes his performance will reflect not only physical preparation but also spiritual trust.
“I just need to have faith and trust in the Lord with all my heart.”
Fully aware of the challenge ahead against the country’s best young athletes, Semesi is keeping his approach simple stay focused and deliver when it matters most.
“My goal is to beat records and bring home gold for my school and my family who have pushed me hard.”
As the Coca-Cola Games begin, attention will be on the young Rotuman powerhouse whose journey from the islands to the national stage continues to inspire one throw at a time.
