TWO Fijian boxers are in contention for the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games according to Fiji Amateur Boxing coach Cam Todd.

The two boxers are part of Team Fiji’s amateur boxing team currently in New Zealand preparing for the Invitational Competition scheduled for this weekend.

“The two elite boys Ben Williams and Elijah Qiokata they are in contention for Commonwealth Games next year. So, I’m looking to get them more competition here and when they get back to Fiji they will be boxing against their opponents in their respective divisions

“The two boxers are first year elites. Elite is the boxing term for senior boxers who are in their 19th year. Ben William competes at the 65kg while Ejigah Qiokata will represent Fiji at the 70kg division.

“Their participation in the New Zealand invitationals is a buildup to the Commonwealth games, giving them quality international opponents to sharpen their skills and perfecting their craft,” said Todd.

The invitational will also be an excellent opportunity for one of Fiji’s elite female boxer’s Jasmine Dakunakamakama who competes at the 60kg category.

“Jasmine Daunakamakama, she doesn’t get any competition in Fiji so it’s essential that I get her competition. She is also someone that I ‘m looking forward to having opportunities to go to the Commonwealth Games.”

Todd is excited for his young team and he is adamant that the experience will be a steeping stone for them to bigger international competition around the globe.

“The rest of the team are all young and upcoming boxers; they all have amazing potential and that’s why I want them here so when they go to the big competitions it’s less scary for them during their performances”

Todd says Fiji is blessed with an abundance of boxing talents with many not being able to make the trip due to the limited financial support of the trip.
