THE Namosi challenge, Fiji’s toughest race will take place on June 7, offering runners a chance to tackle the highlands’ steep hills, mountains and breathtaking scenery.
The event will feature a half marathon 21kilometres an individual marathon 10km, and a team marathon, where groups of four will each run 10km to complete a full marathon.
Founder of Namosi Eco Retreat, Danny Jason has been a strong advocate for the event, which aligns with his mission to showcase the beauty of Namosi’s interior.
“The marathon is a great way to promote Namosi’s stunning landscapes and isolated villages while also supporting a good cause,” he said.
The race, organised by the Suva Marathon Club, also aims to raise funds for a footbridge in Navunikabi Village, which will benefit more than 500 villagers, including school children and the elderly who need to cross the river daily.
“This is not just about running; it’s about making a real difference for the people of Namosi,” Jason said.
Jason recalled past fundraising efforts, including support for WOW Kids Fiji and the renovation of Namosi Secondary School’s roofs.
“The marathon has always been about helping the community,” he added.
Last year’s event saw nearly 500 participants, and organisers hope to exceed that number this year.
Runners can expect scenic mountain views, welcoming villagers offering coconuts and refreshments and a challenging but rewarding course.
“You don’t have to be a professional runner; you can walk, jog and just enjoy the experience,” Jason said.
To register for the event, individuals and corporate teams can visit the Suva Marathon Club’s website.
Volunteers are also needed to assist on race day.
Jason, who has yet to confirm his participation as a runner, said his focus will be on ensuring a smooth event.
“I’ll be there to welcome everyone at the finish line with snacks, water, and music,” he said.
The Namosi challenge is more than just a race, it’s a chance to test endurance, enjoy Fiji’s hidden beauty and support a vital community project.
