THE FIJI Water Flying Fijians do not need a new game plan against Japan. They need a cleaner execution of the one that has taken them to two straight Pacific Nations Cup titles.
Japan will come with pace, structure and confidence. Fiji must answer with relentless physicality and the freedom to attack when opportunities open.
But the margin for error will be smaller for tonight’s final in Tokyo. Fiji scored seven tries in its 45-29 semi-fi nal win over Canada last weekend.
It was a performance that showed the attacking threat of the defending champions. But it also exposed weaknesses.
Canada scored four tries and found ways to put pressure on Fiji’s defence. The Flying Fijians also conceded two cards late in the match.
Japan will be waiting for those opportunities. The Brave Blossoms demolished the United States 63-14 in their semi-fi nal, scoring nine tries and keeping the Americans scoreless in the second half.
Their rugby is based on speed and accuracy. They move the ball quickly, use short passing and support runners and force defenders to make repeated decisions.
Fiji’s game is different. The Flying Fijians want to win the gain line, carry hard and use their offloading and broken-field ability to turn one opportunity into another.
That is where the final could be won.
Interim head coach Senirusi Seruvakula said Fiji must respect Japan without losing sight of its own strengths.
“They are a well-coached side. We are not only looking at them, but we will also be focused on our strengths head ing into Saturday,” Seruvakula declared.
For halfback Sam Wye, the lesson from Canada is equally clear.
“We’ve taken our learnings from last week and we’re to put our best foot forward this week. Big emphasis this week on fi nishing strong,” he said.
That finishing mentality will be crucial.
Fiji have beaten Japan in the past two PNC fi nals — 41-17 in 2024 and 33-27 last year.
But tonight at 10.05pm at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium, Tokyo, is a new final.
For the Flying Fijians, the message is simple. Keep the strengths. Remove the mistakes. Finish strong.
