IT was not instinct, but a secret code word from Terio Tamani which allowed Alasio Naduva to score what is now dubbed as the try of the year contender during the HSBC World Rugby Sydney 7s in Australia last weekend.

During the second half of the pool game against Japan, the restart was quickly taken by Tamani with the ball sent deep into opposition territory.

The Japanese defenders let the ball go, given how far it had been kicked and it seemed destined to bounce over the dead ball line for a 22 metre drop out before Naduva bolted past the entire Japanese side to touch down in a spectacular somersault fashion just shy of the dead-ball line.

Naduva said the secret code was 3D which meant to kick off long and for him to sprint from the half-way mark to chase the ball.

Considering how close the ball landed near the dead-ball line, Naduva said he was very much sure of dotting the ball down.

“It is one of our kick off codes,” Naduva said.

“I was sure that I was going to score the try because I chased so hard.”

Naduva received the UL Mark of Excellence Award for the spectacular try.
