Thank you for carrying out your duties in Iraq, PM tells soldiers

PRIME Minister Sitiveni Rabuka knows the Republic of Fiji Military Forces will be ready when other peacekeeping duties are sent their way.

In thanking the team that has arrived from Iraq, during a traditional ceremony held at Albert Park yesterday, Mr Rabuka said they played a vital role in peacekeeping missions.

“I thank you for carrying out your duties in Iraq and I know you will be ready, if there is a call for the troops.”

He reiterated that there is a great need to help Fiji today, and he wishes for the troops to show the same level of hard work and perseverance in the duties that is here.

Lieutenant Colonel Timoci Naivalu, the Commanding Officer for the contingent in Iraq told Government officials that their departure wasn’t easy.

“As we sat in the plane to return home, all our eyes were filled with tears, knowing 11 of us did not make it back home.

“We have concluded the 21 years military involvement in Iraq and we have also grown to know that nation.”

Mr Naivalu also thanked everyone that worked behind the scenes in the preparation for the home welcoming parade.

He sought forgiveness from the Government and the people regarding the Fiji military’s role in the last incident a few years back.
