BACK home after competing at the Pacific Mini Games in Koror, Palau recently, athlete Waisake Tewa says he plans to work even harder to achieve his aim of winning gold in future athletics competitions.

The national sprinter returned with a bronze and silver medal for his individual events; the male 100m and 200m events respectively. In the 100m final, he crossed the finish line with a time of 10.60s, behind Pais Wisil and Tovetuna Tuna of PNG and in the 200m final, he finished with a time of 21.60s behind Tuna and ahead of Johnny Bai, both from PNG.

Speaking to this newspaper, he acknowledged the results attained. “My main aim now is to work harder to ensure I get gold. I know I did not manage to achieve that but upon my return, I know
the best way to do that would be to train harder so that I could move further from where I left off,” Tewa said. Competing in Palau, he set his sights on clinching five medals and was motivated to do so with commitment and guidance.

“The one thing that helped motivate me were the words of my coach as he reminded me to try and win some medals in the individual events since we mostly rely on the relays. “During this outing, my aim was to try and win five medals however I didn’t win a gold medal but won bronze and silver but my coach told me my target was achieved. “I’d like to thank my coach for his belief and commitment in training us.”

Besides the medals he attained for his individual events, the Naboutini, Saqani, Cakaudrove sprinter helped Fiji win silver medals in the male 4x100m and mixed 4x400m relays. Fiji finished the former with a time of 40.76s behind PNG with 40.23s and ahead of Samoa with 42.73s.

In the mixed relay, Fiji crossed the line with a time of 3:31.77s behind with PNG finishing first with 3:30.15s and ahead of Tahiti with 3:39.68s
