Team Fiji sprinter Waisake Tewa will hit the tracks of Stade de France today in the men’s 100m preliminary round event.
Tewa is the only Team Fiji representative that will compete in the sport of athletics at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The 21-year-old former Nakasi High School student had a feel of the tracks in Paris yesterday.
“This is my first Olympics, it wasn’t a dream I can say but I guess its all-in place according to God’s plan,” the Lomaiviti sprinter stated.
His selection came as a surprise, but Tewa understands the huge task at hand.
“I felt nervous, did some self reflection and got stuck into training. I know I will be running against some of the best runners in the world, but I will do my best and make my country and family proud.
“It was not part of my plan because growing up as a Fijian I always played rugby. No one in my family took up athletics but when I discovered the talent I had, I focused on it and trained hard,’ he added.
Tewa was part of Team Fiji’s 2023 Pacific Games team where he set a new personal best of 10.71s in the men’s 100m.
He was also the only Fijian male athlete to make the 100m in the Solomon Islands.
Tewa also competed in this year’s World Athletics Indoor Championship in Glasgow, Scotland and the Oceania Championship two months ago in Suva.
