IT was a sombre Christmas and new year for the Valebalavu family as 48-year-old Cema Adi Valebalavu continued her battle with cervical cancer.

Doctors at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital informed the family residing in Nukuboco Settlement, Khalsa Rd, Nasinu, that her cancer was in its final stage and that further treatment or surgery was no longer possible.

They were advised to care for her at home. As the family struggled to meet basic needs, Mrs Valebalavu’s husband, Timoci Valebalavu, 49, sold a mat his wife had woven to celebrate her birthday on New Year’s Eve.

“I left my job three months ago to take care of my wife,” Mr Valebalavu said.

“I also have my 81-year-old mother at home who needs care, and our only son is now the sole breadwinner for the family.”

He said the family’s life changed in September last year when doctors first diagnosed his wife with cervical cancer.

“From September her health continued to deteriorate.

“Just before Christmas, when we took her back to hospital, the doctor told us the cancer had reached its final stage. He said there was no treatment and that we would have to look after her at home.”

Mr Valebalavu is now appealing to the public for assistance to help the family provide proper care and support during these difficult times.

“Any kind of support would be appreciated.

“My wife needs diapers, and with only my son working, it has been very hard for him to take care of all of us.”
