FIJI Chemicals Limited has contributed about 100 termite baits and traps to curb the termite problem in the Western Division.

At a handover ceremony in Lautoka this week, Women, Children and Social Protection Minister Sashi Kiran said termite infestation, particularly from the aggressive Asian Subterranean Termites or AST, had become a serious concern.

“Once confined to specific localities, these pests have spread from Lautoka to Suva,” she said.

“As far as Labasa in Vanua Levu, threatening not only homes and buildings but also the peace of mind and safety of our citizens.”

Ms Kiran said the problem required collaborative and sustained action.

“The ministry is responsible for the care and protection of some of the most vulnerable members of our society — elderly residents in our Golden Age Homes, children in orphanages and women seeking refuge in shelters.

“The impact of termite infestation in these institutions is not only a matter of property damage; it’s a matter of dignity, safety and wellbeing.”

Ms Kiran thanked Fiji Chemicals Ltd for stepping forward with its support.

“These termite baits and traps will be deployed to Golden Age Homes in Suva, Lautoka and Labasa; to orphanages like St Mina’s Home, Veilomani Boys Home and St Christopher’s Home, as well as to women’s shelters across Fiji.

“When the private sector partners with the Government to meet urgent needs on the ground, we move closer to building a resilient and caring society.”
