Young tennis players from five schools in the Suva area were part of the Vodafone Suva Open Tennis Championships, which got underway at the Victoria Courts yesterday.

The tournament is being competed for from the junior to open grades and sees a total of more than 200 participants taking part in the event.

Suva Tennis coach Sumit Kumar remarked the number of participants was higher than expected.

“We didn’t expect this large scale of participants coming over, initially, we thought there would be 120, but we have just over 200 participants in all the categories combined,” Kumar said.

There were 31 players alone from schools such as St. Anne’s School, Gospel Primary School and the Holy Trinity Anglican School.

Meanwhile, with competition continuing today, there will be a large number of participants coming in from around Fiji.

“Yes, so the participants are from all over Fiji,” he said.

“There are players from Nadi, Lautoka and of course Suva, but there have been participants that have come from Australia, New Zealand and the Solomon Islands for this competition.”

Kumar also shared how young tennis players had been dedicated to their dai;ly training.

The competition is also being held at the Suva Lawn Tennis Court at Albert Park.
