Interfaith Search Fiji chair Zoran Ali has labelled the violent attack on a Hindu temple in Suva as a “grave act of sacrilege”, condemning it as a direct assault on religious harmony, peace, and multicultural values in Fiji.

Mr Ali emphasised the deep emotional and spiritual trauma inflicted on the Hindu community by the destruction of sacred idols and described the incident as not only an attack on a religious site but also “a stark affront to peace, tolerance, and harmony in a multiracial society and a place we call our home”.

“Samabula Suva temple was violently attacked in broad daylight, resulting in the damage of sacred deities and the desecration of a place of worship that holds deep spiritual significance for devotees,” Mr Ali said in a statement.

“Hindu temples are sanctuaries of faith, devotion, and cultural heritage, they symbolise spiritual devotion, community bonds, and religious identity.

“Damaging these sacred spaces and idols inflicts not just physical harm but also emotional and spiritual pain on countless believers who regard these symbols with reverence and devotion.”

Warning of the broader societal impact, Mr Ali said such acts threatened the nation’s values of coexistence.

“Acts of sacrilege undermine the fundamental principles of coexistence and mutual respect that are essential for a harmonious society.

“They incite fear, division, and hatred, threatening social cohesion and community well-being. It is imperative that authorities swiftly investigate such incidents, bring perpetrators to justice, and ensure the protection and security of all religious communities.”

He urged the public to reflect on the importance of interfaith respect and unity.

“No act of violence or desecration can ever justify religious intolerance.

“Justice and equality must prevail to prevent such tragedies from recurring and to uphold the dignity and sanctity of places of worship.

“The police department should get to the root cause of this shameful act and investigate why this individual harbours so much hate for the deities and for a particular community.

“Answers to this question will help us better educate people on the importance of respecting all religions and all places of worship.”
