Fiji Navy Commander Captain Timoci Natuva says collaboration between maritime agencies remains key in monitoring suspected drug trafficking activities within Fiji waters.
He confirmed the Navy continues to work closely with the Fiji Police Force through intelligence sharing arrangements.
“We’ve been working with the police sharing some information, so whenever we need to understand some of the vessels, they give us requests for information that we provide them.”
Captain Natuva said intelligence alerts were assessed as they were received, but recent high-level reports had been limited.
“In terms of intelligence, not recently.”
He said efforts were underway to align surveillance operations across agencies operating in the maritime domain.
“We’re trying to synchronise all our efforts with working in the maritime space.”
Captain Natuva highlighted the role of regional co-operation and information networks in supporting Fiji’s maritime security framework.
“We have our partners, regional partners that support us as well, so there’s efforts trying to manage maritime security.”
He added Fiji’s vast maritime borders and limited resources meant community information remained vital in countering transnational drug movements.
