The Fiji Amateur Boxing team shifts their focus towards their next significant challenge, the Elite Men’s and Women’s World Championships in Liverpool, England from September 1-14.

Their recent success at the Queensland International Open Golden Gloves tournament last week, where they secured two gold and three silver medals against tough opponents from Australia and New Zealand, has propelled them forward.

According to Head coach Cam Todd, the team’s performance at the Australian Golden Gloves tournament was impressive.

“This was a really good tour for our team, the Australian Golden Gloves is a big tournament, there was more than 450 boxers there from Australia and New Zealand, and a few other countries. It was a very high-level competition,” said Todd.

Looking ahead to September, the team has wasted no time and has already resumed training in preparation for the upcoming competition.

Coach Todd emphasised the importance of such competitions for the development of senior boxers aiming to represent Fiji in the Commonwealth Games.

“The competition is essential, it is part of the pathway for our senior boxers, to represent Fiji in the commonwealth, which I’m thinking of taking a team of 10 boxers, so these competitions are essential for their preparations.”
