“OUR performance is not solely measured by medals, but also by personal bests, great humility and resilience in moments of disappointment, these are part of our national story.”

This was the firm message driven by Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, at the Team Fiji thanksgiving ceremony at Hall A of the Vodafone Arena in Laucala Bay, Suva last Saturday.

The event celebrated the achievements of Team Fiji’s athletes and officials at the Pacific Mini Games in Koror, Palau which began on June 29 and finished on July 9.

In his address, Saukuru highlighted the continued backing of the support rendered by the rest of the country as the athletes competed in Palau.

“I know you felt the support of the entire nation as we celebrated your success and watched you write a new chapter in the Pacific Mini Games history,” he said.

In thanking the national contingent for their efforts, he re-affirmed the Government’s commitment towards its support for athletes representing Fiji at the highest level.

“On behalf of the Government of Fiji and the Fijian people, I thank you for inspiring us.

“While there were moments the results did not go in our own favour, we must remember that our participation means more than winning.

“I am proud of your government’s support for our athletes and our commitment to preparing you for regional and international events.

“We remain dedicated to supporting Fijian sports at all levels, from grassroots to elite athletes.”

In his address, he quoted the late South African president Nelson Mandela on the power within sports to change the world and to inspire and unite people in a massive unifying force.

Team Fiji raked in a total of 27 gold, 30 silver and 24 bronze medals.
