FIJI has confirmed participation in nine sports for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with some disciplines still awaiting qualification.
The Games will take place from July 23 to August 2, showcasing a smaller lineup of sports compared to previous editions.
According to Fiji Chef de mission Ajay Ballu there is no new sport entering the games for team Fiji in the 2026.
“With the Commonwealth Games, we have nine sports, and the nine sports are basketball, athletics, para-athletics, para-powerlifting, bowls, boxing, we have judo, weightlifting and swimming.”
He added that while basketball has already qualified through the Palau Games, other sports such as weightlifting and para disciplines are still pending official qualification,
“Weightlifting, we need an answer from the IF, who’s qualified. We have para-athletic and para-powerlifting that needs to come in,” he said.
CEO Vanessa Kilner further clarified the situation regarding qualification, saying,
“Netball had to qualify. They didn’t qualify. Weightlifting is also a qualifying sport.”
She emphasized the importance of securing spots while preparing a strong team to compete.
Kilner expressed confidence in the athletes’ potential across several sports who are vying for a podium finish in the competition.
“I think we’ve actually got a really, really good team going into Glasgow. We’ve got some really good weightlifters that are targeted for Glasgow. We’ve got a great 3×3 basketball team that have come out of Palau,” she highlighted.
The final team roster is expected by May 25, with ongoing preparations focusing on logistics and athlete support. As the Games approach, Fiji aims to deliver a competitive and well-supported delegation to Glasgow.
The Games will take place from July 23 to August 2, showcasing a smaller lineup of sports compared to previous editions.
