PREPARATION has shifted into top gear for Team Fiji, with head coach Willie Elaisa placing strong emphasis on race execution as the national side settles into camp.

The squad assembled on Sunday evening before hitting the pool together for their first full training session at the National Aquatic Centre in Suva yesterday.

For Elaisa, the approach is clear and deliberate.

“Right now, the focus is on race preparation and execution,” he said.

With a balanced squad combining experienced swimmers and young swimmers, he believes experienced swimmers are expected to set the standard, while younger representatives gain exposure at the highest level.

“The mix of youth and experience is vital for our development. We have our top-tier swimmers alongside our up-and-coming athletes, and that gives the new reps an opportunity to observe and learn,” he said.

But beyond team composition, Elaisa insists success will ultimately come down to discipline in the tournament.

Elaisa stressed that while physical preparation is important, the ability to deliver under pressure and stick to race strategies will define Fiji’s performance when it matters most.

“Most of my focus is on successful race plan execution and that’s what will lead to medals.”

Elaisa acknowledging the role of local support in lifting the team.

Competing on home soil also adds another dimension to the team.

“The support is vital when we’re racing at home,” he added.

As Team Fiji continues its build-up for the championship this week, the message from the coach remains firm as the swimmers look to turn potential into podium finishes.

The 14th Oceania Swimming Championships 2026 will start from Friday, May 8 until May 13.
