Former Vodafone Cup champions Sabeto Roosters created history by becoming the first local rugby league club to advocate breast cancer awareness.

The side donned a new set of pink and white uniforms during its match against the Ravoravo Rabbitohs in a top-of-the-table round eight clash of the Fiji National Rugby League’s 2020 Vodafone Cup Western State competition at Prince Charles Park in Nadi last week.

The jerseys were presented to the team by ardent supporter Ratu Josateki Nalukuya of Saunaka Village.

According to the club’s president, Paula Saukuru, it was the first time they were creating awareness among the rugby league family on the realities of breast cancer.

“We should be united in our voice to educate the people that breast cancer is real,” he said.

“We need everyone’s support in the community to be able to create breast cancer awareness.

“Everyone should provide the support and love to those suffering from the killer disease.”

Saukuru’s advice to women is to have timely medical check-ups for detection at an early stage.

“Consult a doctor if your body feels different so that the medical experts are able to take appropriate action.

“Detection at an early stage offers a great opportunity to live a longer and happier with the rest of the family.

“Don’t be scared to seek assistance and share with family and friends what you are experiencing as a breast cancer patient.”

Saukuru called for family members to practise empathy at all times.

“The main thing is the support from a woman’s husband and family members.”

Meanwhile, the Sabeto Roosters took a step further to promote Pinktober month by sharing ideas with family members and during village meetings, while the hordes of its boisterous fans will wear pink T-shirts at all its matches for the month.
