TD03F tracks towards Northern Fiji, impact from tonight into Thursday

The Fiji Meteorological Service says Tropical Depression TD03F continues to gradually track east-southeast toward the northern parts of the Fiji Group, with associated rain and strong winds expected to affect the country through to later Thursday.

In a statement, Fiji Met said an active trough of low pressure linked to the system is continuing to affect the country, bringing overcast conditions and occasional to periods of rain. Persistent heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding, especially as soils are already saturated from ongoing rainfall.

TD03F is anticipated to move through the northern parts of the Fiji Group later tonight and weaken over the Lau Group by Thursday.

Rain is expected to persist across the group until Thursday, before gradually easing and clearing from the west later tomorrow.

Fiji Met warned that the continued rainfall increases the risk of flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, including downstream of major rivers, along small streams, and possibly affecting major river systems across the country.

Strong northerly winds, averaging around 50 kilometres per hour with gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour, are forecast to affect the northern parts of Vanua Levu, the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, and northern Lau from later today through Thursday.
