Tropical Cyclone Vaianu is continuing its southward movement away from Fiji and is now heading towards New Zealand, according to MetService New Zealand.
In its latest update, MetService said the system is currently positioned roughly halfway between Fiji and New Zealand, with winds of about 95km/h near its centre.
It is a category 2 system currently and will weaken by the time it reaches NZ.
Forecasters say the cyclone is expected to continue tracking south and is likely to make landfall in New Zealand by Sunday.
The system, which earlier impacted parts of Fiji with heavy rain, strong winds and flooding, has since weakened but remains a significant weather system as it moves into cooler waters.
Authorities in New Zealand are now closely monitoring the cyclone’s approach, with potential impacts expected over the coming days.
Meanwhile, weather conditions across Fiji are gradually improving as the system moves further away, although residual effects such as flooding and strong winds continue in some areas.
