A Fiji Met forecast model shows rain bands associated with TC Vaianu for Tuesday 12pm

The risk of flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas remains high as Tropical Cyclone Vaianu continues to influence weather conditions across the country.

The Fiji Meteorological Service said high intensity rainfall is expected, which could lead to rising river levels and flash flooding nationwide.

At midday today, Tropical Cyclone Vaianu was analysed about 500 kilometres west-northwest of Yasawa-i-Rara and was moving southeast at about five knots.

The system is expected to intensify further and could reach Category 3 strength within the next 12 hours.

While the cyclone’s centre is forecast to remain over open waters southwest of the Fiji group, associated gale force winds are expected to affect the waters of Yasawa, Mamanuca, southwest Viti Levu, Kadavu and the Vatu-i-Ra Passage.

Forecasters say strong winds and rain bands linked to the system will continue to impact land areas across Fiji.

A heavy rain warning remains in force for the entire country, along with a flash flood alert due to the heightened risk of flooding.

A strong wind warning also remains in place for all land areas of Fiji, as authorities urge the public to remain alert and take precautions.
