Tropical Cyclone Vaianu has intensified to a Category 2 system at 6am today, according to the latest forecast track map released by the Fiji Meteorological Service.
The updated tracking shows the system strengthening as it moves along its projected path over open waters to the west and south of the Fiji group.
Based on the forecast timeline, the cyclone is expected to continue on a south to southeast track, with key positions indicated at 6am Monday, 12pm Monday and 6pm Monday.
By 6am Tuesday or earlier, TC Vaianu is forecasted to become a category 3 cyclone and will maintain this strength as it will pass West of Fiji.
While the centre of the cyclone is forecast to remain away from the main islands, its associated rain bands are expected to continue affecting the country.
Heavy rain and strong winds are likely to be experienced across parts of the group, with warnings and alerts expected to remain in force as the system develops further.
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions as the system tracks near Fiji waters over the coming days.
