Tavua sets target

TAVUA will face Seaqaqa in the home and away playoff to decide the winner of the 2017 Vodafone Senior League.

Tavua won the Viti Levu zone competition while Seaqaqa was crowned as the Vanua Levu zone winner.

Fiji Football Association chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said the dates for the Viti Levu/Vanua Levu playoffs had been decided.

Yusuf said the first match would be played on August 19 and the next match was scheduled for August 26.

“There will be a coin toss done to decide the venue for the first game,” he said.

Tavua has been in development mode after being relegated to the senior division in 2013. The district lost majority of the senior players following the relegation.

Tavua Football Association president Pranesh Prakash said most of the players in the current squad were aged between 18-24 years.

Prakash said they would be relying on their home-grown talents to be promoted to the top flight.

“We won all of our home games this season,” he said.

“It has been a good outing so far. There is a lot of support from the fans. Some even turn up to watch the training sessions and then transport the players home.

“There are high expectations from the players. We will treat each game as the final. Seaqaqa is a strong side. Many of the players in the team have never been to Vanua Levu so the trip will also be a learning experience.”

Tavua and Savusavu were relegated to the senior division in 2013 after league format was restructured.

Prakash said while their development program had worked well, player drain in the transfer window posed a major problem.

“We bring up these young boys but when the transfer window opens, the bigger teams poach them,” he said.

“This leaves a vacuum in the squad which takes time to be filled.”
