Tavua has recorded the lowest crime rate in Fiji this year, with only 71 reported cases this year, according to Acting Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga.
Speaking at the Fijian Media Association Town Hall session in Tavua last night, Mr Lutunauga praised the commitment of the people of Tavua and their strong partnership with police through community initiatives.
“I would like to thank the people of Tavua, one of the districts of Fiji, for registering the lowest crime rate with only 71 cases this year,” Mr Lutunauga said.
“That, in itself, is the biggest achievement we have.”
He said the Tavua policing district covers 298 square kilometres, with six villages, 12 schools, and 438 cane farms, serving a population of around 45,000 people.
The district has two police stations — Tavua and Vatukoula — and two community posts in Nadarivatu and Lausa, supported by a total manpower of 83 officers.
Mr Lutunauga attributed the district’s success to the active involvement of 64 community crime prevention committees, which have strengthened local policing and improved trust between officers and residents.
While Tavua has reported minor drug-related incidents, he noted that serious drug activity remains minimal.
“Drugs are present, but not in large amounts,” he said.
“The last major methamphetamine case was two years ago — four kilograms valued at $1.3 million — and 1,000 marijuana plants worth $3.2 million were recently uprooted before reaching the public.”
