DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad says Government is negotiating with its Indian counterpart to build a private hospital.

He revealed this during a budget consultation in Nadi this week, adding they were also focusing on allowing private hospitals to provide healthcare services in Fiji.

“We have negotiated with the Indian Government in trying to build a super speciality hospital,” Prof Prasad said.

“It will be a 50-bed cardiology and another 50 beds for oncology.

“That project is going to start very soon. It’s a big project.”

Prof Prasad also said the Australian Government has provided further support for the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

“We are negotiating with ASPEN Medical, the way the Lautoka and Ba hospitals were handed by the previous government before the election.

“In the last two years we have taken a decisive step to ensure that we fix that agreement, we are still negotiating, but the services, we have insisted has to be improved.

“The New Zealand Government built the Nausori Health Centre in one year. And we are fixing the other health centres.”
