FINALLY someone has come up with the introduction of tag rugby for primary schools.
I salute the CEO for FRU for coming up with this idea.
I for one have been totally against contact physical sports at the younger age.
During our time at the SDU we usually introduce this sport for schools we visited for enjoyment and skills improvement for both boys and girls.
Many a time we introduce to children competition at an early age and we did not know the consequence it does to the child when result turn the other way. Parents and teachers running on the sidelines pushing their children to unlimited edges with words we use.
How many of our children have had countless injuries from early contact ages, dislocated shoulders, concussion, broken ribs and bones, and some have died because of this early age contact sports.
Recently, Suva primary schools’ officials complained of the lack of rugby skills most children playing in their competition possess.
How many of these children have been taught the basics of five tackling skills, picking up the ball, passing, running, kicking and many more skills of rugby?
I for one will volunteer to teach tag rugby and basic rugby skills to any school and will support FRU for this effort.
Tag rugby is fun, naturally inclusive, community focused and it’s safe.
Tag rugby is a fast moving non contact invasion game suitable for boys and girls to play together.
The key to the game is enjoyment, with running and handling skills coming to the fore.
