About 200 family members of the late Taito Tabaleka converged at the Central Cuisine Restaurant on Saturday for a family reunion.
The reunion featured the descendants of Kiti Likuceva and Maca Nagale, who were the daughters of Mr Tabaleka and Kelera Seniloli of Yanuca Island.
The main purpose of the reunion meeting was for all the members of the families to get together and know each other better.
Family member Abdul Khan said there were now six generations.
“The story starts with our great grandfather Taito Tabaleka, who was originally from Nabuli Village from the Rewa province,” he said.
“During the olden days, men used to sail the seas looking for new places to settle.
“As they sailed the southern coast of Viti Levu, some of the men got off at Beqa Island and settled there, while Taito Tabaleka and his younger brother Maleli Rasari travelled to Yanuca Island and settled there and became the owners of the island.
“They then formed a community on the island with these details —Yavusa Nukunitabua, Mataqali Batiluva, Tokatoka Tui ni Marama. Tutu vakavanua: — na bete, Kau: na Niu kei na ika: na vasua.”
