FIJI and Pacific sprint king Banuve Tabakaucoro believes programs like the current Fiji Sports Council (FSC) athletics camp are pivotal in uncovering hidden talents across the country.
It provides an opportunity for students without professional coaching a much-needed chance to shine.
Tabakaucoro, who has dominated the regional athletics scene for years, said the camp provides a platform for young athletes from smaller schools to prepare for major competitions like inter-house meets, zones, and ultimately the Fiji Finals.
“Some of the other traditional schools that compete at the Coke Games have their own coaches to rely on during the off-season, but for others, this door being opened is a blessing,” Tabakaucoro shared.
The camp focuses on the basics, something the star athlete believes is key to long-term success. “It’s about building a foundation. Grassroot athletics must start somewhere.”
Tabakaucoro, who is being mentored by coach Albert Miller emphasised that mental preparation is just as crucial as physical training.
Reflecting on his own journey, Tabakaucoro said he was fortunate to have met his coach early on, but opportunities like this weren’t as accessible during his time.
“There was nothing of this sort. I was lucky my coach worked with me from grade six, but to have camps like this involving sprints, throws, jumps, and distance events all in one place, it’s amazing,” he said.
The camp, supported by the Fiji Sports Council and Athletics Fiji, aims to create an equal playing field for all athletes, regardless of their school background.
