THE Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team will return home on Monday as the 10th placed team in the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series Sydney 7s.

This after the Saiasi Fuli-coached side defeated England 15-12 in the Trophy Championship final at Spotless Stadium in Sydney yesterday.

Fuli said they had to fight hard to achieve the result they got.

“It was very tough as we had to play the final game with only eight players,” Fuli said.

“We lost Raijieli Daveua to suspension before losing Vasiti, Tokasa and Luisa Tisolo to injuries yesterday.

“Our aim was to hit the top eight but we were unlucky as we had a tough pool which started with the loss to Canada before we beat Russia and then lost that close game to Ireland.

“We could have won that game which should have swung our pool our way but that is the way things happen in rugby, sometimes results go the way you want and sometimes it goes against you.”

Fuli said they came to the tournament in 11th position, which was very tough in the series, which kept getting tougher every year.

He said he had been working very hard to lift the girls’ fitness level to where they could compete with the other top teams in the competition.

The former national sevens rep said the girls had to dig deep to earn this achievement.

“Our next goal is to keep improving our standard so we can compete well with the other top teams in the competition.”
