The Korolevu women’s team made an unexpected switch from netball to rugby after travelling from Navosa to Rakiraki for the Fiji Bitter Malake 7s.

With their trip costing $2000, the team was initially set to compete in the netball competition.

However, when they arrived and learned it had been cancelled, they quickly decided to enter the rugby tournament instead.

Team captain Adi Vika Bavui explained their decision.

“We didn’t want our trip to Rakiraki to go to waste. After hearing about the cancellation, we all agreed to play rugby,” she said.

Bavui added that rugby wasn’t entirely new to the team.

“We’ve played some rugby back in Navosa, so the girls were familiar with it.”

Despite their last-minute switch, the team performed remarkably well on the field, showing skills that made it seem like they had been playing rugby for much longer.
