The journey to represent Fiji at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau has officially begun, with the first of three swimming trials held last Saturday at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Suva.

Fiji Swimming treasurer Eugene Panuve confirmed that 23 swimmers training locally and representing five clubs, competed in the short course mini meet, the first steppingstone toward team selection.

“This is the first of three trials before our actual selection in April,” Panuve stated.

The team for the Mini Games will comprise 16 swimmers, eight males and eight females, with a balanced mix of four under-18 and four over-18 swimmers in each category.

The event prioritises developing younger athletes, offering a platform for them to gain exposure and experience.

“Only swimmers competing in these trials will be eligible for selection,” Panuve emphasized.

“It’s encouraging to see 23 vying for just 16 places.”

The trials will culminate in a final selection meet on April 13.

By May, Fiji Swimming aims to finalize preparations, ensuring the selected athletes are ready for the Mini Games, which will run from June 29 to July 9.

To qualify, swimmers must meet a minimum performance requirement, having previously competed in Oceania or international competitions representing Fiji or their respective clubs, as endorsed by the national federation.

This includes school or overseas invitational meets.

Panuve is optimistic about the progress made so far, acknowledging the enthusiasm and determination shown by the athletes.

“The turnout for the first trial was good. It’s a decent start, considering the level of competition and what’s at stake,” he added.

Fiji Swimming now looks forward to the remaining two trials as athletes continue to chase their dreams of donning the national colors at the Pacific Mini Games.
