Fiji national rep Hansel McCaig managed a second place finish in the Men’s 100-metre heats of the World Aquatics World Championship in Doha, a qualifying tournament for the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The 21-year-old clocked a time of 51.77 seconds, which is also his personal best at the competition.

He said preparations for the championship had been on track, and he was now looking forward to his next event.

“Preparations leading up to this World Championship have been the best I’ve had in a long time given the access to the Aquatic Centre.

So this has allowed me to enter this competition with high confidence in seeing results after a new training regime,” the former Natabua High student said.

“To compete against the World’s best is always an experience like no other.

To see all the different ways to approach a race and how each person has their strengths and weaknesses.

It’s a prime opportunity to add or remove small details in my training program to become a better athlete.”

McCaig is now preparing for his last event, 50m freestyle, which he competes in today.

“I have the 50m freestyle tomorrow (Friday Qatar).

“The goal was for me to get as close as possible to the Olympic B qualifying time for the 50m Freestyle which is 22.07s, swimming a 22.6s will be a huge achievement.”
