What began as a personal sacrifice in the rural township of Seaqaqa, Vanua Levu, has culminated in a proud academic achievement for 34-year-old Joseva Maikitu Ravula, who graduated today with a Bachelor of Applied Social Science from the Fiji National University (FNU).

Joseva’s journey is one of extraordinary resilience. Forced to leave school while still a fourth former, to care for his pregnant mother and allow his younger siblings to continue their education, Joseva made a decision that would shape not only his life but also the lives of those around him.

“My mother was having pregnancy complications at the time and as one of the eldest, I had to sacrifice my future for my younger siblings,” he recalls.

“I have no regrets—it was the right thing to do.”

Despite this early setback, Joseva’s determination never wavered.

He began volunteering with the Fiji Red Cross Society at the Seaqaqa Branch, dedicating nine years to humanitarian work before securing a full-time position at the organisation’s headquarters in Suva.

He is currently employed by Live and Learn Environmental Education Fiji.

“There was no turning back—only forward and upward.

“I will always have humanitarians at heart because it gave me a chance to reset my future.”

While balancing his responsibilities at work and supporting his family, Joseva never gave up on education.

He applied to FNU as a mature student and found a perfect fit.

“I tried other universities, but they didn’t accommodate my work schedule.

“FNU was the right choice. It was flexible, and I was able to complete the program in three years.”

Joseva credits his achievement to the unwavering support of his family and colleagues.

“Without their encouragement and belief in me, this wouldn’t have been possible.”

Joseva’s story is a shining example of how determination, sacrifice, and support can turn adversity into achievement.

His graduation not only marks a personal milestone—it serves as an inspiration for many who continue to dream against the odds.
