NADI fly-half Aseri Vatuinaruku missed a late penalty as Suva won the crucial Skipper Cup clash 36-33 at Prince Charles Park yesterday.
Vatuinaruku’s 30 metre attempt hit the upright to the dismay of the home fans who had expected their side to win after an explosive start.
Suva made a second half come-back after being down 16-10 at the break.
The Capital City side utilised their opportunities well to convert them into points.
Suva head coach Akuila Nasi said they turned up at Prince Charles Park with a mission to win.
“It is towards the end of the competition and every team is gunning for a victory,” Nasi said.
“To come away with a bonus point is an added advantage. Hats off to the boys for their hard work during the week.
“It was a gallant second half performance.
“The message at half time to the players was to trust in themselves and play according to the game plan.
“To beat Nadi on their home soil is a big result and to lead the competition at this stage is a big boost for Suva rugby.”
Nadi team manager Jeff Tamata said the game was entertaining as expected.
He said they were unfortunate not to level the scores at the end.
“The boys gave their best but a penalty try hurt us,” Tamata said.
In the first half, Vatuinaruku kicked two penalties and Fredrick Hicks and Joeli Lesavua scored a try each for the hosts.
Meli Rusa scored a try for the visitors while Mosese Tikoduadua kicked a penalty and a conversion for the visitors.
Suva’s second half tries were scored by Aporosa Duwai, Isireli Masiwini, Vesi Rarawa. The side was also awarded a penalty try.
Tikoduadua nailed three more conversions.
Inia Naqia and Lote Nasiga scored a try each for Nadi. Vatuinaruku converted one and kicked a further two penalties.
