Netball players in Suva left the court and picked up rubbish instead last Saturday morning as part of a new community outreach program launched by the Suva Netball Association (SNA).
Over 50 players took part in the early morning clean-up from 6am-7am, collecting rubbish along the shoreline from the Muanikau Road junction to the National Netball Centre, all before their games began later that day.
This marks the start of a five-week community program introduced by SNA, with each weekend activity focusing on different issues affecting the community, including the environment, personal health and drug awareness.
SNA secretary Justice Volahiga said the initiative will run alongside the remaining five rounds of the 2025 club season.
“The idea is to take our members beyond the court,” Volahiga said.
“We want to instill civic pride, compassion, environmental awareness, and promote healthier life choices.”
Last Saturday’s clean-up was done in collaboration with the Suva City Council and led by SNA president Alumeci Sachs, alongside social committee members Jovesa and Margie.
“It was encouraging to see our players, especially the younger ones, step up and contribute in such a practical way,” Sachs said.
“They showed real heart.”
The association acknowledged support from NewWorld IGA, which is backing the program.
Volahiga said the five-week initiative reflects the association’s wider development philosophy, which includes empowering women and children, encouraging responsible behavior and working closely with key stakeholders.
This Saturday’s focus will shift to personal health, with free health screening and services provided in partnership with Medical Services Pacific.
Volahiga said these community efforts are meant to create long-term impact.
“We want to build well-rounded players who are not just strong on court but also active citizens in society,” he said.
“These activities are small steps, but they contribute to a bigger vision.”
